This is the second of two personal notes and photos from the actor, Walter Matthau, given to his friend, the world famous sports physician, Dr. Robert Kerlan.
This photo, in its original acrylic frame, is of Matthau reacting to a kiss from Old English sheep dog, Puffenstuf. In Matthau's unique style of --occasionally scatological - humor, the personal note reads:
"June 16, 1979 To Dr. Kerlan Affection is affection. Get it where you can! Dr. Shmear Fartz"
Matthau and Kerlan were neighbors, and the actor and the doctor were often together at the Hollywood Park Race Track. From writer Brad Darrach's 1974 profile of Matthau in People Magazine: "A waitress arrives at the table Matthau is sharing with the track physician, Robert Kerlan. Matthau inquires about the chow mein. 'Any roaches in it, Velma? Don’t like roaches. Too many calories.'"
